Map Views
For your convenience, we’ve divided the map of South Dakota into the most popular preset areas, so you don’t have to, including by Region and by City. But if you prefer a different map view, just zoom the map to where you’d like, and the site should remember your last map view when you come back on the next visit.
Alerts
This is where you’ll see major travel alerts that the South Dakota DOT wants you to know about in an emergency like severe weather, evacuation, or missing person. This is where SDDOT will post important messages. You’ll know there are new messages waiting for you when you see a red circle with the number of unread messages inside. Here is also where you’ll find SDDOT’s Twitter page links, as well as links to download the SD511 app for iPhone or Android.
Traffic Notices
These are lists of all the important Driving Events SDDOT wants you to know about. You can click the tabs to alternate between active Incidents, Construction, CVO Restrictions, and Events. Note, the Traffic Notices you see here are the same events as those you see on the map overlays under the Driving Alerts section, on the right side of the map, where you add map layers.
Cameras
When you first visit SD511.org, by default, Traffic Camera map icons are displayed as map icons 511.org. If you don’t see them, click or tap the icon in the box at the very bottom of the menu, and check the box for Traffic Cameras. The layer should be added to your map, and the site will remember your choice for the next visit. You can also use the Cameras tab at the top of the page. Search by scrolling through the list, by typing in the search bar, or by using the route filter. If you have a free My511 account, you can also favorite cameras by clicking the heart icon inside the camera viewer.

Login
Click Login to register for a free My511 account. Registration is free and we do not sell your information with anyone. My511 sends real-time email or text alerts based on a custom profile you set up including schedule, frequency, and location. Having a My511 account also lets you favorite cameras on SD511.org. When you’re logged into MySD511, you’ll see a heart icon in the camera viewer. This icon lets you favorite cameras so you can find them easily on subsequent visits.

Zoom you inor out . Using the mouse scroll wheel accomplished the same act.
Map Overlays
Map Overlayslocated in the right-side menu. Click this option to toggle on or off the following overlays on the map of South Dakota:
- Traffic Speeds
- Road Conditions (a Legend for Road Conditions is shown just underneath the toggle)
- 24hr Threat Forecast
- Commercial Vehicle Restrictions
- Driving Directions
- Satellite View
When any of the overlays are enabled, you can click on a road segment from the map to get more information about the segment. For example: with Road Conditions enabled, clicking on I-90 between Murdo and Chamberlain will show a card with more information including current Road Conditions and Weather.
Driving Directions
New to SD511.org is the Driving Directions tool. Now you can get travel times, directions, and mileage to or from anywhere in South Dakota. The Driving Directions tool is located to the upper left corner of the page. Start typing an origin destination in the Point A box, and your destination in the Point B box. You can also select from popular destinations using the icon in the bottom right of the tool. The default directions are by car, but you can use the three white buttons at the bottom of the tool to switch directions between Traffic, Walking, or Cycling. You can toggle the Driving Directions tool on or off in Map Overlays.
Driving Alerts
Driving Alertsare located in the right-side menu. Click this icon to toggle on or off the following types of Driving Alerts on the map of South Dakota:
- Incidents
- Construction
- CVO Restrictions
- Disturbances
- Disasters
- Obstructions
- Scheduled Events
The website will remember your saved toggles on your next visit. Note: These events are also visible in the "Traffic Notices" section in the top menu.
Weather
Weatheris located in the right-side menu. Click this icon to toggle on or off the following weather layers on the map of South Dakota:
- Precipitation
- Air Temperature
- Wind Speed
- NWS Alerts (when active)
- Weather Sensor data including Air Temperature, Dew Point, Relative Humidity, and Wind Speed in mph
Traveler Information
Traveler Informationis located in the right-side menu. Click this icon to toggle on or off the following weather layers on the map of South Dakota:
- Traffic Cameras
- Rest Areas including Amenities
Map Legends
Map Legendsare prefilled dependent upon the layer(s) you have selected. You can minimize the legends area by clicking on the close button [x]. You can maximize the area by clicking on the legend icon .
